    Occupational Therapy and Mental Health

    Occupational Therapy
    and Mental Health

Occupational therapy is a profession concerned
with promoting health and well being through
    occupation.
The primary goal of occupational therapy is to
enable people to participate in the activities of
    everyday life.
Occupational therapy is a health profession that
assists individuals to maximise independence in
their daily occupations and life roles.
Occupational therapists view occupation as all
those activities people do that give our life
meaning and determine who we are.
In the field of mental health, occupational
therapists specialise in assessing how an
individual's mental illness impacts on their ability
to function in their everyday occupations and roles.

What Kinds of People Use OT Services?

Occupational therapists work with people from all
walks of life and address a range of therapy needs.
Occupational therapists may work with individuals
    with:

    • Schizophrenia
    • Bipolar affective disorder
    • Depression
    • Eating disorders
    • Anxiety and phobias
    • Stress related disorders
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Obsessive compulsive disorder
OTs in mental health work primarily with the
person who has a mental illness. They also work
with other health professionals and community
organisations and with carers, family and friends

    What Services do OTs Provide?

    Occupational therapists in mental health
provide individual and group assessment and
    intervention in hospital, community, home
    and work environments.
    Occupational therapists and clients work
together to develop and achieve personal
    goals, including those within vocational
    (work), pre-vocational, leisure and social
    aspects of people's lives.
Occupational therapists can assist people to
    enhance their budgeting, social, interpersonal,
    time management and stress management
    skills.
Occupational therapists work mainly in the
public health system; however they may also
work in the private health and employment
    sectors.

How Can OT Help Individuals with Mental
    Health Issues?

    An occupational therapist specialising in
mental health can help individuals to:
    • Better understand mental health and
take an active part in their wellness
    • Develop skills to live more independently
    in the community
    • Deal with life change, stress and
    emotions more easily
    • Feel better about themselves.
    • Improve personal relationships
    • Develop hobbies and interests
    • Return to work
    • Link in with community groups and
    agencies
The goal is to maximize the client's skills for
    living.
